This groundbreaking portrait exhibition with some 80 paintings by Elaine de Kooning drew more than 250,000 visitors, making it one of the largest exhibition turnouts in the National Portrait Gallery's history.
The National Portrait Gallery has organized a major retrospective "Elaine de Kooning: Portraits" March 13, 2015 through January 10, 2016. Levis Fine Art has advised the museum on the exhibition.
The exhibition showcases Elaine de Kooning's unique ability to capture her sitters' identity by reflecting a single gesture that echoed their "inner truth" - with a few bold brush strokes. She would often omit many or all of their facial features to underscore how one's face is only a mask that allows a person to be recognized - but not known by others.
Levis Fine Art, as a representative of a number of Elaine de Kooning's heirs, has a strong inventory of her portraits, figurative and complete abstractions.
